SYDNEY (Reuters) – Pilots at Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd <0293.HK> are pushing to be included in restructuring talks at the carrier and will run a newspaper advertisement to drum up public support, a union representing them told Reuters on Tuesday.
The comments come after the group this month declined to apply for more government employment subsidies for its main business units, freeing it from the condition to retain jobs tied to the grants and fuelling worries of layoffs.
“What we want is to make sure if there is some sort of decision with regards to the future of the pilots, that we will be involved in discussions on what the structure looks like,” said Chris Beebe, the general secretary of the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association (HKAOA).
Beebe declined to comment on whether pilots would offer concessions like temporary salary cuts or unpaid leave schemes as have been
CHICAGO (Reuters) – United Airlines’ pilots voted on Monday to accept a deal that would avert 2,850 furloughs set for Thursday, while thousands of other U.S. airline employees are hoping Congress will extend federal aid to save their jobs.
An initial $25 billion government bailout that covered airlines’ payrolls and protected jobs for six months expires on Sept. 30, driving a fervent last-minute push by the industry for Congress to agree on a fresh stimulus package.
Chicago-based United has already put in motion steps to furlough around 12,000 frontline employees, excluding pilots, on Thursday, officials said.
Under the agreement with its pilots, United’s drastically reduced flying schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic will be spread across its entire pilot base, saving jobs and reducing the need for costly training once demand returns.
U.S. airlines have argued that without support from Washington, they will not have a trained workforce in place
United Airlines (UAL) – Get Report and its pilots reached an agreement that canceled 2,850 furloughs that had been scheduled for this week, the pilots’ union said Monday.
Shares of the Chicago airline at last check were up 5.5% to $36.07.
The Air Line Pilots Association said it voted to approve the Pandemic Recovery Letter of Agreement with United Airlines management. The accord prevents any United pilot from being furloughed at least until June.
The agreement keeps all 13,000 United pilots employed.
The deal also offers a second round of early-separation options for all pilots age 50+ with 10 years of experience. And it reduces or terminates the effect of temporary work reductions based on a recovery in passenger demand or other market factors, the union said.
The agreement was ratified by about 58% of the pilots who voted on it.

Nearly 3,000 United pilots who were slated to be furloughed later this week will keep their jobs, thanks to a new deal between the airline and the pilots’ union. The mitigation agreement, announced by the Airline Pilots Association and United on Monday, also avoids the furloughs of another 1,050 pilots that were slated for next year.
However, United will still furlough roughly 12,000 workers on October 1, a senior executive said during a press briefing — unless Congress extends
EasyJet (EZJ.L) has rejected claims made by a union representative that the company is “hanging by a thread,” as reported by the BBC.
Martin Entwistle allegedly said that the budget airline is in a “really dire” situation, after a meeting with easyJet’s chief financial officer Andrew Findlay, in a leaked recording obtained by the broadcaster.
However, easyJet denies that the recording reflects “what easyJet or its CFO said.”
The airline told Yahoo Finance: “We have been clear the whole industry has been impacted by the pandemic, however easyJet has taken a prudent approach to capacity and the right actions on cash preservation. The airline continues to keep all liquidity options under review, but no decisions have been taken.
“Winter flying is always significantly lower than summer and
