A month ago, Authentic was the Kentucky Derby spoiler in a thrilling head-to-head faceoff with Tiz the Law.

Swiss Skydiver gave Authentic a taste of its own medicine Saturday. The filly outlasted Authentic by a neck to take home the 2020 Preakness Stakes, concluding the Triple Crown cycle with three different winners for each race.

Swiss Skydiver is the first filly to win a Triple Crown race since Rachel Alexandria in 2009 and just the 12th in horse racing’s history. Six fillies have won the Preakness, making it the likeliest Triple Crown race to produce a female winner.

Stimulus check rules and requirements are not one-size-fits-all. For older adults and retired people, factors like your your tax filings, your AGI, your pension, if you’re part of the Social Security Disability Insurance program and whether or not you count as a dependent to the IRS all contribute to your chances of receiving a first stimulus check, and a second payment, if a new bill passes in Congress.

The fast-fashion retailer plans to lean toward more online shopping.

H&M plans to close 250 stores next year as they struggle with sales during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Swedish fashion retailer announced on Thursday that it plans to close hundreds of brick-and-mortar stores as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, which contributed to its 5% sales decline in September.

“More and more customers started shopping online during the pandemic, and they are making it clear that they value a convenient and inspiring experience in which stores and online interact and strengthen each other,” said H&M CEO Helena Helmersson in a statement.

She continued, “To ensure that our offerings are relevant to customers and improve availability in all channels, speed and flexibility will be even more important in the future, particularly in

Pension Funds Around The World Moving To Abandon Investments In Fossil Fuels

October 3, 2020

| business

KEY POINTS

  • The New Jersey bill mandates total divestment from coal companies within two years
  • New Jersey Treasury Department, which administers the pension fund, opposes the divestment bill
  • The oil and gas sector now only accounts for about 2.5% of the market cap of the S&P 500 index

The State of New Jersey may soon order its state pension fund to divest from fossil fuels, following a long list of other state, municipal and national pension funds that have already done so.

In a recent op-ed published in the Newark Star-Ledger newspaper, Richard J. Codey (a former governor of New Jersey) and Tom Sanzillo (director of finance at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis) wrote that it is high time for the Garden State to pull out of fossil fuel investments — for both environmental and financial reasons.

New Jersey State Senators Bob Smith and Linda Greenstein, both

China had mocked Trump for not taking the pandemic seriously. Now it’s very personal.

SEOUL, South Korea – President Donald Trump has spent much of this year blaming China for the coronavirus, while Beijing mocked him for not taking the pandemic seriously enough.

Now Trump’s own diagnosis has turned the battle acutely personal while deepening the uncertainty in U.S.-China relations. Trump was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment on Friday, as several prominent aides and supporters, including adviser Kellyanne Conway, also tested positive.

Beijing’s leadership has been reticent in its response to Trump’s infection. State-run news agency Xinhua published two lines Saturday saying China’s leader, Xi Jinping, wished the U.S. president and first lady a speedy recovery – a day behind many other heads of state including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Taiwan’s Tsai Ing-wen.

Foreign relations experts say China and other U.S. rivals are likely weighing their options for geopolitical action while Washington is preoccupied

Tennessee Titans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was fined $35,000 on Saturday following two unnecessary roughing penalties against the Minnesota Vikings during a Week 3 victory, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

#Titans DE Jadeveon Clowney was fined $35,000 for two unnecessary roughness fouls in last week’s win over the #Vikings. He had an illegal blindside block that wiped out a pick-six.

It’s the second-highest fine in Clowney’s career. The veteran was hit with a $40,110 penalty for a roughing-the-passer call against then-Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles in December 2018.

It’s also the eighth time in Clowney’s seven-year career the defensive end has received a fine from the league. Saturday’s penalty brings his total up to $151,677 forfeited, according to Spotrac.

The 2014 No. 1 overall draft pick signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Titans this offseason after ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler

Low interest rates benefit some but carry risks for the ecconomy

October 3, 2020

That’s not easy when the safe investments that pension funds usually rely on are paying less than 1 percent, a consequence of low interest rates.

CalPERS, the nation’s largest public pension plan, fell short of its goal in the fiscal year that ended June 30. Now, along with embracing riskier investments like private equity, Bienvenue is gambling on making low rates work for him, by borrowing billions of dollars in hopes of juicing the pension plan’s returns.

“We have to take more risk in some places,” he said. “…Systemically low interest rates, the net effect makes the challenge more difficult.”

CalPERS’ shift is just one example of how an era of persistently low interest rates has rippled across the economy, altering incentives while benefiting some groups and hurting others.

Consumers have snapped up 0% percent auto loans and mortgages at sub-3 percent rates. That’s helped the economy by driving sales

Rod Sims warns business he’s still watching

Australia’s competition chief, Rod Sims, has warned big companies not to take advantage of the coronavirus crisis to nobble their competitors and set themselves up as monopolies.

Stopping Australia emerging from the pandemic as an economy where even more power is concentrated in the hands of a few players is just one entry on a long to-do list kept by Sims, who has spent the crisis helping keep food on the shelves of supermarkets and stopping banks rushing to foreclose on bad loans by authorising companies to coordinate their behaviour in ways that would normally be against the law.

Impending death, as the saying goes, has a way of focusing the mind. There’s no reason to believe President Trump faces imminent death as a result of his recently testing positive for the coronavirus.

But the brief video he released before he went into hospital showed a Trump we’ve rarely seen before: sombre, scared and, perhaps for the first time, truly shaken by the pandemic’s threat to both the nation and himself. It’s conceivable that this momentous new development in the US presidential race, just a month from election day, could restore a seriousness to our politics that it has lacked for quite a while.

Exhibit A in the unseriousness of American political life has, of course, been our tragically inept response

Airbus executive says aviation outlook worse than expected

October 3, 2020
| business

BERLIN (Reuters) – The outlook for the aviation industry has deteriorated again due to rising coronavirus infections and renewed travel restrictions, Airbus chief operating officer Michael Schoellhorn was quoted as saying on Saturday.

With air travel at a fraction of normal levels due to restrictions and travellers’ fears related to the pandemic, airlines have slowed deliveries of new aircraft.

Airbus has said it needs to shed 15,000 posts worldwide.

In an interview with the Handelsblatt business daily, Schoellhorn said the situation in early autumn was worse than the company had expected in the summer, adding that the planned 15,000 job cuts would be the minimum.

As some Airbus factories were already underutilized before the pandemic, labour unions now fear that the management could decide to shut down entire locations.

At least for Germany, Schoellhorn ruled out such a move.

“In terms of substance, I do not see any German locations
