Sen. Durbin asks Amy Coney Barrett about George Floyd: ‘I have two Black children, that was very, very personal for my family.’

WASHINGTON – Bringing it to the real world, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., plowed new ground at Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing on Tuesday when he asked the mother of two Black children about the impact of George Floyd’s death.

Barrett, guarded in her answers until this point, gave a candid reply.

In May, Floyd, a Black man, died after a white Minneapolis police officer pinned him down with a knee to his neck for nearly nine minutes. His death sparked a new chapter of racial reckoning in the U.S.

Barrett told Durbin after Floyd died she discussed with daughter Vivian, who is Black, “that there would be a risk to her brother or the sons she might have one day, of, that kind of brutality.”

Democrats know they are powerless to block the confirmation of Barrett, who President Donald Trump tapped for the Chicago-based 7th Circuit Court

JPMorgan puts $30b toward aiding Black, Latino homeownership

JPMorgan Chase said Thursday it will extend billions in loans to Black and Latino homebuyers and small business owners in an expanded effort toward fixing what the bank calls “systemic racism” in the country’s economic system.

The New York bank said it is committing $30 billion over the next five years toward programs that include earmarking more money for getting Black and Latino families into homeownership and providing additional financing to build affordable rental housing units.

“Systemic racism is a tragic part of America’s history,” said JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon in a statement. “We can do more and do better to break down systems that have propagated racism and widespread economic inequality.”

The bank, which has $3.2 trillion in assets, said it expects the $30 billion to help finance 40,000 additional mortgages for Black and Latino households, another 20,000 loans that will refinance mortgages and help construct 100,000 affordable

Personal resilience plays big part in heart health for Black Americans

October 7, 2020

Black people who have a strong sense of psychological well-being may have better heart health, a new study indicates.

It suggests that feelings of optimism and a sense of purpose and control — hallmarks of psychosocial resilience — are more important to heart health than where people live, researchers said.

Lead researcher Tené Lewis, an associate professor at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, noted that differences in heart health between Black and White Americans have been documented for decades. But individual factors affecting Black Americans have not been well understood.

“Almost everything we know about Black Americans and their health focuses on deficits, yet we really need to begin to identify strengths,” she said. “Understanding which strengths matter most for Black Americans — and under which contexts — will allow us to develop the most appropriate and applicable public health interventions for this group.”

Town’s land sale could raise money, but residents worry Black community will lose its history

A township in Cape May County said it has scheduled a property tax sale in October to help recoup losses from state-ordered, coronavirus shutdowns and restrictions.

Ten of the 15 properties up for sale in Middle Township are in the Whitesboro area of the township, a community established in 1901 for Black settlers to own homes, especially to escape the violence and racial oppression in Jim Crow America. The sale has some community members wondering if their historic shore community will retain its identity as an area established primarily for people of color.

“This was an African-American safe haven,” said Shirley Green, a longtime resident and local historian. “For them to be tax selling is pretty-much running us out of our quality of life.”

But Green said she understands both sides of the issue. She owns nearly two dozen properties in Whitesboro, many of which are residential rentals. She said

Gold: Prepare For A Flock Of Black Swans

October 4, 2020

Wall Street opened sharply lower on Trump uncertainty, when he tested positive for COVID-19. The news upended the looming US presidential election campaign. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the US only added 661,000 jobs monthly through mid-September compared to the consensus forecast of 850,000. Government stimulus is running out and the virus is again spreading more easily as the summer ends and people are more likely to stay inside with others.

The government stimulus response in March was only a fraction of what the market and the economy appeared to need. In March, the Fed and the Treasury joined their balance sheets and planned to allocate up to 10% of GDP to the crisis. That is about $20 trillion, which is triple the stimulus that was provided in March. Then we saw a dead-cat bounce in the economy. The Fed appeared to provide some confidence,

Black Lives Matter mask policies at work raise legal questions

October 3, 2020

  • Workers at chains including Whataburger, Ralphs, and Whole Foods are fighting for their right to wear Black Lives Matter masks and other gear on the job.
  • Employers have the right to create dress codes that prevent workers from wearing clothing with any sort of messaging, according to employment and discrimination attorney Wendy Greene.
  • However, if these policies are not regularly enforced, employers could be subject to discrimination claims.
  • “Even though generally, employers are within their legal rights to bar employees from wearing ‘Black Lives Matter’ masks and shirts, employers should shift the focus from whether I can legally do so to should I do so?” Greene said.

Workers are fighting for their right to wear Black Lives Matter gear on the job. But, can they win in court?

Last week, Ma’Kiya Congious filed a complaint with Texas officials against Whataburger, saying the burger

Esrever Wines was founded in 2011 by friends Jasmine Dunn, Tyshemia Ladson, and Ashanti Middleton, and they produced and bottled their first wine in 2018. “Esrever was started at Jasmine’s mother Cheryl’s kitchen table,” says Ladson. “Her home was our refuge from the world ever since we were in elementary school, and her kitchen table became our boardroom.”

One evening, the three friends were gathered around the table discussing the joys and pains of life. “We all share a love for

The brainchild of Swiss, from the garage collective So Solid Crew, the first Black Pound Day was held on 27 June and it is estimated that the monthly event has so far raised more than £100,000 for black-owned British companies.

Falling on the first Saturday of each month, Black Pound Day encourages people to spend locally or online with black-owned businesses and invest in communities that have been historically economically disadvantaged.

Speaking to the Guardian, the 37-year-old said he first had the idea 12 years ago for “a day where we just poured back into our community economically”, having noticed a lack of support for black shops while growing up

Reebok has hired Kerby Jean-Raymond, a prominent Black designer and activist, to be one of its top executives, reporting directly to president Matt O’Toole. Jean-Raymond, the son of Haitian immigrants, is founder and owner of the Pyer Moss fashion line, a New York business that has had a partnership with Reebok for the past four years. Jean-Raymond will continue to own Pyer Moss separately, a Reebok spokesman said, and will split his time between New York and Boston, where Reebok’s headquarters is located. In his role as vice president of creative direction, Jean-Raymond will “provide creative leadership across all design disciplines,” according to the company. Jean-Raymond will also play a key role in Reebok’s antiracism efforts. Jean-Raymond said: “I welcome this opportunity to help invigorate the brand with new ideas, while also focusing on instilling a sense of social purpose into our work.” — JON CHESTO
