How can you possibly know how your business is performing if you’re not tracking and measuring very specific metrics? Without them, it’s like navigating a desert without a compass. If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. And it’s in the online world, where consumer behavior data is so readily available, that metrics can really shine.

Soaring commercial auto insurance rates, onerous conditions ‘killing us,’ small businesses say

October 13, 2020

For more than five years, Frank Hunt’s moving company has been a pillar of his community in Barrie, Ont., but he says his award-winning business is now on its knees — and he blames his insurance company.

“They’re killing us. They’re literally shutting down the business,” he told CBC News. He says onerous demands from his insurer have led to a loss of about 75 per cent of his revenue.

Hunt, 73, says his company pays about $10,000 for commercial vehicle insurance each year. He says there have been no claims or accidents. “Not even a broken windshield,” he said.

His problems began in May, when his insurer suddenly demanded his drivers upgrade their licences to beyond what Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation requires. He and his drivers are legally allowed to drive the company’s five-ton moving trucks with a basic G licence.

“This year, the insurance company comes up with,

  • It found that 60 individuals had spent $12 million in Trump’s businesses and, in some form, saw their interests advanced by his administration.
  • Trump won the election in 2016 pledging to “drain the swamp,” but is profiting from favor-seekers patronizing his hotels and resorts.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

More than 200 foreign governments, lobbying groups, and individuals spent money in President Donald Trump’s businesses and benefitted from his administration, a New York Times investigation found.

It documents how foreign government officials, corporate executives, lobbyists, and attorneys patronized Trump businesses and were awarded lucrative federal contracts, ambassadorship, and appointments to federal task forces. Others secured legal changes. For some, the favor granted by the president was a tweet.

According to the Times investigation, 60

Hard-hit small businesses face long winter without lifeline

October 9, 2020

The struggle to reach a deal to revive the paycheck program just weeks before the election is all the more surprising because it’s one of the few issues that has had strong bipartisan support throughout the pandemic. Lawmakers overwhelmingly backed the program, which provided $525 billion to more than 5 million businesses, and employers embraced it because they could convert the loans to grants if they agreed not to fire workers.

But PPP has become hostage to bigger fights over the size of the entire rescue package, with Republicans refusing to agree to more than $2 trillion in spending sought by Democrats.

“The failure to pass continued relief should be met with far more outrage,” said John Lettieri, co-founder of the Economic Innovation Group think tank, and a former Senate aide. “It’s absolutely shameful.”

Now, restaurants, retailers and other small businesses that have been among the hardest hit face existential

London, UK, Oct. 08, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — While the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spark uncertainty throughout the economy, a growing number of ambitious entrepreneurs are using the pandemic as a unique opportunity to design, build, and develop their own businesses from the ground up. Following a worrying period of job losses, the number of new businesses being registered with Companies House is understood to have experienced a 50% year-on-year increase, with many new start-ups securing essential funding through SME finance expert, BizBritain.

A UK-based commercial finance broker, BizBritain has secured funding totalling more than £30 million since the service was first launched in 2012, with an estimated £6 million being distributed over the past 6 months alone during the country’s COVID-19 lockdown. Companies House data suggests that while the number of new businesses initially dropped through March, April, and May, start-up registrations grew to a whopping

Some businesses in Pearland can vie for grant money — anywhere from $1,000 to $15,000 — as part of the city’s partnership with a local nonprofit organization to distribute federal coronavirus relief funds to companies impacted by the virus.

The Pearland City Council recently approved that use for $800,000 in grant money received from the Texas Division of Emergency Management Coronavirus Relief Fund, part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) stimulus legislation aimed at helping people and companies affected by the pandemic.

Businesses that apply will be selected through a lottery system.

Applications, which will be accepted through the month, were scheduled to open at 9 a.m. Oct 12, and the landing page and application both were scheduled to go live that morning on the city’s website at pearlandtx.gov.

Applicants must meet requirements to qualify, including that they have a net annual revenue of no

5,000 Companies. 582,000 Jobs Created. Inside the Numbers on America’s Hottest Businesses

October 7, 2020

| business

Each year, Inc. sorts through the Inc. 5000 list to find the facts, figures, and trends that make for great stories. Some of those trends are more obvious than others–like the fact that California, with the fifth-largest global economy and a population larger than that of many European countries, is first in pretty much everything. But there are some really interesting stories found a bit further down the list.

Like the fact that one of the oldest Inc. 5000 companies, Itasca, Illinois-based W.S. Darley & Co. (founded 1908), manufactures fire trucks and firefighting equipment (and is still growing!). And that Signallamp Health, which is the only Inc. 5000 company located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, grew revenue 1,845 percent in the past three years and added 40 jobs. And that the Detroit metro area, which has struggled for so long, ranked 11th in total revenue last year.

The Inc. 5000 is about

Community-focused investing has funded local small businesses and startups across the US. Since 2016, half a billion dollars has been raised from investment crowdfunding, generating $2 billion in economic activity and supporting 100,000 jobs.

According to Regulation Crowdfunding by Congressional District: A Report Card by Crowdfund Capital Advisors, Congress can encourage this more by creating the Main Street Recovery Co-Investment Fund. The United Kingdom has already done this to great success. It worked so well that Fund was re-upped twice, including to support small businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

A critical lesson from the 2007-2009 financial crisis was that access to capital for small businesses matters. Small businesses were hit harder than large companies by the Great Recession. During and for a period after the financial

Businesses Back to Growth in Top 3 Arab Economies After Stumble

October 5, 2020
| business

(Bloomberg) — Business activity in the Arab world’s three largest economies returned to growth, with Egypt seeing its first expansion in 14 months.

After a deterioration in August, the non-oil private sectors improved last month despite continuing job losses as companies adjusted to the economic challenges of the global pandemic while governments eased restrictions put in place to stop the coronavirus.

A measure of non-oil private sector activity in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates rose last month above the threshold of 50 that separates growth from contraction, according to Purchasing Managers’ Index surveys compiled by IHS Markit. Qatar’s Financial Center PMI fell sharply but stayed above the critical 50 mark.
