Beleaguered Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren — whose administration came under fire for mishandling the case of a Black man who died in police custody — was arraigned Monday afternoon on unrelated campaign finance charges.

Her lawyer, Joseph Damelio, entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf in the Monroe County Hall of Justice to one count each of scheme to defraud and an election-law violation for allegedly evading campaign contribution limits while running for a second term in 2017.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, a onetime rising star in the Democratic Party who faces corruption charges that could end her career — and land her behind bars — appeared in a Monroe County courtroom Monday to plead not guilty to all charges.

Warren, 43, is accused of bypassing campaign contribution limits when she successfully ran for reelection as mayor in 2017.

Cayuga County Judge Thomas Leone will preside over her case in Monroe County to possibly avoid any judicial ties to the mayor.

“In my 14 years on the bench, I’ve never told my administrative judge ‘no,’ so here I am in Rochester today,” he said.

Appearing via a live stream at Monroe County Supreme Court, Warren sat cross-legged in the courtroom’s first row wearing a lilac face mask and a white coat.

Leone didn’t mince words in releasing the embattled mayor from custody as her court

BitMEX Ether Futures Trading Contracts Fall by Half in Wake of U.S. Charges

October 6, 2020

Ether futures open interest on BitMEX has fallen by half since U.S. charges were announced last week.

Investor interest in ether futures traded on BitMEX has declined sharply since the Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange was charged Thursday with illegally operating an unregistered derivatives-trading platform that accepted U.S. customers.

  • At press time, ether futures contracts worth $63 million (179,000 ETH) are open or active on BitMEX, the lowest since May 15, according to data source Skew.
  • Open interest is down nearly 50% from the $125 million observed on Oct. 1.
  • Last week, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) filed civil charges against BitMEX, and the Department of Justice brought criminal charges against BitMEX’s owners for facilitating money laundering and other illegal transactions.
  • Open interest in ether futures on BitMEX was declining even before last week’s charges, in line with a downdraft witnessed across the industry. It had peaked at $214 million on Sept. 1.
  • September’s 17% decline in ether’s price likely dented short-term optimism, causing a slide in

Rochester mayor indicted on felony campaign finance charges

Rochester, N.Y., Mayor Lovely Warren, was indicted Friday on two felony campaign finance charges.

The charges stem from Warren’s re-election campaign three years ago, according to the indictment, which also charges two associates, The New York Times reported.

The indictment accuses Warren, a Democrat, of “knowingly and willfully” attempting to evade contribution limits while engaging in “a systemic and ongoing course of conduct with the intent to defraud more than one person.”

The investigation into Warren’s finances has been underway since two candidates who ran against her in 2017 issued complaints to the state Board of Elections.

Warren has denied any wrongdoing and previously called the investigation a “political witch hunt.” If convicted, she would be removed from office.

Warren is the first female and second African-American mayor of Rochester, home to around 200,000 people in Western New York.

She is slated for arraignment Monday afternoon along with her co-defendants,

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren has been indicted on felony charges relating to her fundraising, Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley announced on Friday.

The indictments stem from Warren’s fundraising activity while seeking a second term in 2017.

Donations to the mayor’s regular campaign were capped at less than $9,000. She also had a leadership PAC subject to much looser fundraising rules, but which was prohibited from directly helping her reelection efforts. Several complaints at the time alleged that this entity was in fact dedicated solely to aiding her candidacy.

Warren is arguably the highest-profile elected official in the state to be indicted on campaign finance violations in recent years.

The investigation into her activity was launched by state Board of Elections Enforcement Counsel Risa Sugarman. Her work has previously led
