Germany was the only euro-area country to record solid economic growth in September, with much of the rest of the region suffering amid weakness in services.

While a global trade pickup is helping industry recover from the coronavirus pandemic, benefiting export-oriented Germany, many countries in the region’s south are more heavily reliant on tourism and hospitality. Those sectors remain badly affected by the crisis, especially with infections rising again.

Governments are warning against unnecessary travel and imposing new restrictions on restaurants and bars. For Spain and France, that means private-sector output shrank again in September, and activity in Italy practically stalled.

IHS Markit’s composite Purchasing Managers’ Index for the 19-country euro area fell to 50.4 from 51.9 in August. While that’s slightly better than initial estimate, it indicates only marginal expansion.

(Bloomberg) — Germany is bracing for a surge in insolvencies starting Thursday, when a moratorium to help companies survive the coronavirus outbreak comes to an end.

From this month, businesses that can’t pay their bills will again be forced to seek court protection. Since March, that hasn’t been the case for those that could pin their lack of liquidity on the pandemic and show they stood a good chance of overcoming the crisis.

“Those that could be saved were rescued,” said Tillman Peeters, managing partner at Frankfurt-based financial advisory firm Falkensteg. “The numbers will inevitably rise” now that the safety net has been removed.

The help offered to ailing companies was part of a package of government measures designed to cushion them from a steep economic recession stemming from the virus. The ending of the moratorium will result in a “wave” of insolvencies and — because of a

Euro zone factory recovery strengthened in Sept as Germany steps up

LONDON, Oct 1 (Reuters) – The euro zone manufacturing recovery gathered pace last month, largely driven by strength in Germany, as the region’s factories saw a surge in demand after some coronavirus restrictions were relaxed, a survey showed.

As the pandemic raged across Europe governments imposed tough lockdowns, but as infection rates fell many of those controls were removed. However, a resurgence in cases has meant some restrictions have now been reimposed.

Still, IHS Markit’s final Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index climbed to 53.7 in September from August’s 51.7, in line with an earlier flash reading and its highest level since August 2018. Anything above 50 indicates growth.

An index measuring output, which feeds into a composite PMI due on Monday and seen as a good guide to economic health, bounced to 57.1 from 55.6, above the 56.8 flash estimate and its highest since February 2018.

The composite PMI also includes

Germany Puts First Auto Boss On Trial Over ‘Dieselgate’ Fraud

Five years after “dieselgate” emissions cheating revelations rocked the car industry, ex-Audi CEO Rupert Stadler on Wednesday became the first top executive to stand trial in Germany.

Stadler, 57, appeared before the Munich district court to answer charges of fraud, falsifying certifications and false advertising.

He wore a face mask as a precaution against the coronavirus as he arrived but then took it off in court.

With him in the dock are former Audi and Porsche manager Wolfgang Hatz and two Audi engineers, all charged with fraud.

German car giant Volkswagen — whose subsidiaries include Porsche, Audi, Skoda and Seat — admitted in September 2015 that it had installed software to rig emissions in 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide.
