A slew of regulatory moves announced this week is positive for the famously free-market-oriented cryptocurrency space, according to Fundstrat Global Advisors LLC.

Developments like the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority banning the sale of crypto derivatives and the U.S. Department of Justice issuing an enforcement framework are beneficial in the long term because they will help reduce nefarious activity in the industry, according to a report by David Grider, Tom Lee and Ken Xuan.

They cited regulators “cleaning up bad actors” as also helping. The market’s focus on news that Square Inc. bought Bitcoin and Bitcoin’s ability to push past $11,000 show that crypto can power through these things, the report said.

“Actions unsurprisingly indicate U.S. and global regulators are committed to stomping out illicit activity, securities violations, money laundering, price manipulation, and noncompliance with banking

The Markets End The Week In Good Shape (Technically Speaking For The Week Of 10/5-10/9)

    October 9, 2020

    | business

My Friday column is divided into two sections. The first uses the long-leading, leading, and coincidental format developed by Arthur Burns and Geoffrey Moore to determine the current economic trajectory. The second looks at the markets.

    Long-Leading Indicators

Financially, the economy is in good shape:

The Fed has been pumping cash into the economy (left). The Fed’s credit market support programs have lowered financial stress; the BBB yield (right) has dropped to 5-year lows.

The earnings picture is improving — but remember that word is clearly relative (emphasis added):

The expectation is for total S&P 500 earnings to decline -22.8% from the same period last year on -2.9% lower revenues. This would follow the -32.3% decline in Q2 when economic and business activities came to a halt as a result of the pandemic-driven lockdowns.

The earnings outlook has been steadily improving since the start of Q3, as economic and business

Bank stocks typically drop during recessions. This time around, with the big players well-capitalized, largely free from the worst of loan loss set-asides and benefitting from a rebounding economy, investors may be looking at an opportunity staring them in the face.

And the biggest banks have clear advantages: fees from investment banking and asset management. (Below are tables showing expected and historical provisions for loan losses, non-interest income, earnings per share and analysts’ ratings for the largest dozen U.S. banks.)

US President Donald Trump said talks with Democrats on a new stimulus bill are going well

    ADDS details, background

President Donald Trump said Thursday he now sees “really good” odds of reaching a deal with Democrats in Congress on a new round of coronavirus stimulus to boost the battered US economy, a sharp reversal from his stance earlier this week.

“We’re starting to have some very productive talks,” he said, referring specifically to proposals for assistance for airlines and $1,200 checks for workers.

“We’re talking about a bigger deal than airlines,” he told Fox Business News. “I think we have a really good chance of doing something.”

His comments marked a definitive about-face after abruptly ending the negotiations with Congressional Democrats on Tuesday and saying the stimulus package would have to wait until after the November 3 election.

The titans of Wall Street have long avoided taking a leadership role on environmental and social issues. Now, as public attitudes shift, they’re changing their position.

What’s happening: JPMorgan Chase announced Thursday that it will spend $30 billion over the next five years to promote racial equality. The announcement from the US largest bank comes after Citi and Bank of America each pledged around $1 billion to advance racial equity and economic opportunity.

When I look for investment opportunities, there’s a lot from which to choose. Electric vehicles, 5G technology and e-commerce are all solid plays these days. Those sectors are performing much better, and have so much more promise, than big bank stocks such as Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) stock.

Despite that, some analysts are even sending some bullish signals these days.

    • Wolfe Research gave WFC an upgrade, calling it a compelling risk/reward stock.
    • UBS upgraded the stock from sell to neutral.

With all due respect to my fellow stock market experts, I don’t see it. But then again, I have a unique perspective when it comes to big bank stocks such as Wells Fargo,

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of PPP Loan Forgiveness Delays

    October 6, 2020
    | business

If getting a PPP loan approved meant you had to move at warp speed, getting one forgiven may well feel like you’re stuck in slow motion.

That’s the case for Andrew Cao, a managing partner at Motoza, the Austin-based digital marketing agency he founded in 2011. Cao tapped into the Paycheck Protection Program — the $521 billion forgivable loan program designed to bridge small businesses through the pandemic–in May, after some of his clients started pulling their business. He applied through a local lender, Horizon Bank, after failing to get in on the first tranche of PPP funding with his company’s own bank, Bank of America.

“It was just a really bad experience, and unfortunately it had to happen this way,” says Cao, who hasn’t taken that experience lightly. “We have been transferring money from BofA to Horizon for the past couple of months,” he adds.

    Goodfood Is A Good Stock – Here’s Why (OTCMKTS:GDDFF)

    Thesis

E-Commerce has taken the world by storm and has disrupted many industries. However, one industry, in particular, is often overlooked that we believe has tremendous online potential – the grocery industry. In particular, we like the Canadian company Goodfood Market Corp. (OTC:GDDFF) due to its measurable competitive advantage over the traditional brick and mortar stores. Goodfood will most likely continue to see strong growth in the years to come thanks to its strong brand loyalty, operational excellence, and the ongoing shift in consumer trends.

    Goodfood Market Corp.

    Overview of the Business

Goodfood Market Corp. is a provider of online subscription meal kits and private-label groceries. Currently, the company has over 300 private label items to choose from as well as 6 meal plans with 35 meals to choose from. Goodfood does a great job of regularly changing up the ingredients and recipes which makes it almost impossible to get bored with their

San Francisco-based Good Eggs delivers groceries locally, with plans to expand.

Yesterday Good Eggs announced the results of a nationwide grocery shopping survey conducted in August, 2020, amongst 2,598 consumers beyond their own customers and operating geography in the San Francisco Bay Area.

    Good Eggs

Results showed that two-thirds of people have bought groceries online, compared to only 13% of households surveyed one year ago (August 2019, by Brick Meets Click), representing a five-fold increase. The bigger news—and opportunity—is the 81% who say they’ll continue to do so post-COVID.

Seventy percent said the #1 benefit (aside from reducing COVID-19 risk) is time savings.  Fifty-one percent say it helps them reduce impulse purchases, and 42% say it makes it easy for them to reorder the same foods regularly.
