Insiders sound off on Florida insurance cost hikes

October 10, 2020

| insurance

As home insurance prices are poised to increase sharply, the South Florida Sun Sentinel asked leading insurance experts to provide their views of the disintegrating state of the market. Here’s what they had to say. Responses have been edited for length and clarity.

Locke Burt, president and CEO, Security First Insurance Co.

Insurance cost drivers are well known and have been reported before — bad weather, increased reinsurance costs, shady contractors, aggressive plaintiffs bar with a favorable legal environment, water losses, fraud. What’s different is the trends seem to be accelerating and the Legislature has not done anything meaningful to change the trajectory of increased costs which, under Florida law, must be passed on to consumers in the required annual rate filings.

The private sector is shrinking and raising rates as fast as they can because the losses are not sustainable and the providers of additional investment capital simply do

PRESIDENTIAL TRAVERSE, N.H. — When Dana Albrycht began planning for his annual hike, he decided that this year it needed to be big.

He chose the Presidential Traverse, a formidable string of eight summits stretching through the White Mountains of New Hampshire that includes the highest peak in the northeastern United States — Mount Washington. Albrycht, who had his right leg removed when he was 11 months old, hiked 21 miles from just before midnight on Sept. 19 to early evening on Sept. 21 when he finished — the most miles he ever logged in a two-day span.

As he planned the trip with three of his best friends, Albrycht, whose trail name is Crutchwalker, knew that he wanted use this hike to make a difference. The pandemic was having a severe impact on local and regional adaptive programs that serve people with disabilities where he lives in Simsbury, Conn.,

Conagra (CAG) Tops Q1 Earnings Estimates, Hikes Dividend

October 1, 2020

| business

Conagra Brands, Inc. CAG posted robust first-quarter fiscal 2021 results, with the top and the bottom line surging year over year and beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Results were backed by increased organic sales, which in turn benefited from higher at-home consumption driving Conagra’s retail business. This also helped the company offset softness in the Foodservice segment, wherein sales fell due to COVID-19.

Quarter in Detail

Conagra’s quarterly adjusted earnings came in at 70 cents, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 57 cents. Moreover, the figure jumped 62.8% from the year-ago quarter. The year-over-year growth can be attributed to increased adjusted net income, higher gross profit as well as reduced SG&A expenses.  Adjusted EPS was somewhat affected by greater average shares outstanding.

Conagra generated net sales of $2,678.9 million, which advanced 12.1% year over year and beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,604.5 million. The year-over-year sales growth was

  • Rep. Katie Porter tore into Celgene CEO Mark Alles over price hikes on a cancer drug, during a congressional hearing on Wednesday.
  • Porter, alongside freshman congresswomen Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, grilled the CEOs of Teva, Celgene, and Bristol-Myers Squibb as part of a House Oversight Committee investigation into the pricing of Teva’s Multiple Sclerosis drug Copaxone and Bristol-Myers Squibb’s multiple myeloma drug Revlimid.
  • During the congressional hearing, Porter, a former consumer protection attorney, tore into Alles, writing key figures in her questions — such as how much the CEO makes, how much a single pill of Revlimid cost over the years, and how much his bonus was as a result

Veolia Hikes Bid for Suez Stake, Seeks Talks on Full Takeover | Investing News

By Gwénaëlle Barzic and Sarah White

PARIS (Reuters) – French waste and water company Veolia

hiked its bid for a stake in rival Suez

on Wednesday, and offered a negotiating window for any subsequent full takeover proposal after its initial approach was rebuffed.

Veolia said it had raised its offer for a 29.9% stake in Suez held by power group Engie

to 3.4 billion euros ($4 billion) from 2.9 billion euros.

The company has been trying to persuade Engie to sell the stake as prelude to launching a full takeover bid for Suez, arguing the two would form a global waste and water champion better equipped to take on rivals, including from China.

But Suez has vehemently rejected the approach, describing it as hostile, and set about creating a foundation for its French water business, which could be a hurdle for any Veolia takeover.

That has led to an increasingly

Nigeria’s main unions to strike over petrol, power price hikes

September 27, 2020

ABUJA, Sept 22 (Reuters) – Nigeria’s main labour unions will begin an indefinite strike from Monday to protest an increase in power and petrol prices, the leader of the body said, after a meeting with the government two weeks ago ended in a deadlock.

The Nigerian Labour Congress, which represents millions of workers across most sectors of Africa’s biggest economy, including parts of the oil industry, plans to embark on a general strike starting next week, leader Ayuba Wabba said.

A reversal of the petrol and power price hikes would avert the strike, Wabba said in a statement.

The government has not yet responded to the strike plans.

Nigeria cut costly subsidies this month to allow the petrol price to move with the market and hiked the power tariff. President Muhammadu Buhari has said the increases were crucial because the country could no longer afford the subsidies.

The country has
