New Zealand opposition leader Judith Collins has been criticised for calling obesity a “personal choice”, creating a headache for her National party which is struggling in the polls ahead of Saturday’s election.

Collins told radio station Newstalk ZB that “people need to start taking some personal responsibility for their weight” before joking that weight gain was not an epidemic and “wasn’t catching”.

New Zealand is listed by the OECD as the third fattest country in the world, with 31% of Kiwis regarded as obese. Aotearoa sits behind only Mexico (32%) and the United States (38%). Two in three Pasifika (66%) and half of Māori (48%) are obese.

Collins attacked suggestions her views oversimplified a complex issue or were heartless. “Do you know what is heartless? Thinking that someone else can cure these issues. We can all take personal responsibility,” she said.

She criticised parents on the AM Show, saying: “It

Personal tragedy, public dissembling: Gladys Berejiklian’s days seem numbered | Australia news

October 12, 2020

| personal

History is littered with women brought undone by the actions of men, women who have seen their lives upended when their partners behaved like scoundrels.

But Gladys Berejiklian?

Will she become the third premier of New South Wales whose career is ended by events before the Independent Commission Against Corruption?

It seems likely.

The revelations of Berejiklian’s “close personal relationship” with the former MP for Wagga Daryl Maguire, who is before the commission over allegations of corrupt conduct, have come as a bombshell.

Even more astounding is that the relationship, begun in 2015, continued until August this year. This was after Berejiklian sacked Maguire from the Liberal party, forced him to sit on the crossbench and prevailed on others to get him to resign as the member for Wagga Wagga.

The allegations against Maguire are in the public domain and in substantial detail.

In her press conference on Monday after

Pope Meets Australian Cardinal Pell in Midst of Money Scandal | Top News

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis met on Monday with Australian Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican’s former economy minister who has returned to Rome after the firing of an Italian cardinal whom Pell had accused of obstructing financial reform.

Pell was cleared earlier this year of sexual abuse charges in Australia after spending 13 months in prison, and it remains unclear whether he will take up another role in the Vatican.

The Vatican announced the meeting between Pell and Pope Francis in a statement on the pope’s daily private audiences, but gave no details. “It went very well,” Pell told reporters in front of his residence just outside the Vatican walls.

Pell returned to Rome on Sept. 30, just days after the pope fired Pell’s nemesis, Italian Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who was accused of embezzlement and nepotism. Becciu has denied all wrongdoing.

While Becciu was number two in the Vatican’s

Daimler, Swiss Re Launch Mobility Insurance Venture | Investing News

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Swiss Re

and carmaker Daimler

announced a joint automotive and mobility insurance venture on Monday, seeking to tap into a wealth of new data generated by highly automated vehicles to help insurers to calculate risk.

The reinsurer and Daimler, parent of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car brand, set up Movinx, a Berlin-based intermediary they will co-own equally, the companies said in a statement.

As connected and autonomous cars generate live data about traffic flows, vehicle reflexes and driver behaviour, the companies expect new opportunities will arise to customise automotive and mobility insurance products.

“Even before cars come off the manufacturing line, we know the specific features and how that car would react in an emergency situation and we can provide a score to insurance partners to better underwrite the risk,” said Pravina Ladva, Swiss Re’s digital transformation officer.

Swiss Re already offers to price risk by looking at

Gladys Berejiklian says she was in ‘close personal relationship’ with former MP when he resigned | Australia news

October 12, 2020

| personal

The premier of New South Wales, Gladys Berejiklian, was in a “a close personal relationship” with a former MP when he was forced to resign from parliament amid a corruption scandal.

But the premier has denied knowing about improper conduct by the former Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire, telling the Independent Commission Against Corruption on Monday she “made the assumption that he was always doing the right thing”.

The NSW Icac is investigating allegations Maguire misused his position as an MP and parliamentary secretary to improperly gain a benefit for himself or for G8way International, a company he “effectively controlled”.

The inquiry previously heard Maguire sought payments to help broker deals for Chinese property developers, and helped “grease the wheels” of a deal to sell the racing heir Louise Waterhouse’s land near the proposed western Sydney airport in 2017 and 2018.

But in bombshell revelations on Monday, Berejiklian revealed she

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance: Now’s the time for estate tax planning | Business News

kiplinger-retirement-2020930

There are several estate planning strategies to consider before the rules change.

tribune news service

This year is an opportune time to consider succession and wealth planning.

One reason is the federal estate and gift tax exemption is at a historic high of $11,580,000 in 2020 — $23,160,000 for couples if portability is elected on a federal estate tax return. Portability allows a married decedent’s unused estate and gift tax exemption to pass to the surviving spouse. The tax rate is 40%.

This exemption amount expires at the end of 2025, but if the Democrats win big in November, odds are good the exemption will fall sooner because Joe Biden has called for lowering it. He hasn’t given an exact figure, but it could revert to pre-2018 levels of about $5 million ($10 million for couples), with inflation adjustments.

Here are two estate planning strategies to consider now before the
