Personal resilience plays big part in heart health for Black Americans

October 7, 2020

Black people who have a strong sense of psychological well-being may have better heart health, a new study indicates.

It suggests that feelings of optimism and a sense of purpose and control — hallmarks of psychosocial resilience — are more important to heart health than where people live, researchers said.

Lead researcher Tené Lewis, an associate professor at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, noted that differences in heart health between Black and White Americans have been documented for decades. But individual factors affecting Black Americans have not been well understood.

“Almost everything we know about Black Americans and their health focuses on deficits, yet we really need to begin to identify strengths,” she said. “Understanding which strengths matter most for Black Americans — and under which contexts — will allow us to develop the most appropriate and applicable public health interventions for this group.”

Wells Fargo cuts more jobs as part of earlier cost-cutting drive

(Reuters) – Wells Fargo & Co <WFC.N> has started to cut jobs at its commercial banking unit as part of larger reductions that will impact nearly all of its functions and business lines, a company spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The bank resumed job cuts in early August after it paused layoffs in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wells Fargo said in July it would launch a broad cost-cutting initiative this year as the bank braces for massive loan losses caused by the pandemic and continues to work through expensive regulatory and operational problems tied to a long-running sales scandal.

“We are at the beginning of a multiyear effort to build a stronger, more efficient company for our customers, employees, communities, and shareholders,” a spokeswoman said via email on Wednesday.

“The work will consist of a broad range of actions, including workforce reductions, to bring our expenses more in line

General Motors to repay some Ohio tax incentives as part of deal with state over shuttered Lordstown plant

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio officials have ordered General Motors to repay $28 million out of $60.3 million in state tax credits the company received, after officials officially determined on Monday that GM broke a deal to keep thousands of jobs at its now-shuttered assembly plant in Lordstown.

As part of the deal, announced Monday by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority, GM also agreed to invest $12 million in the Mahoning Valley area by the end of 2022, in the form of community infrastructure, jobs-training or other community programs. The company will not make up for the other $20.3 million in tax credits it received. The TCA took into account “market conditions and GM’s other operations in Ohio,” when setting the refund amount, according to Todd Walker, an agency spokesman.

The company had received the $60.3 million under the terms of a 2008 deal with state officials. In exchange, GM said

Harley-Davidson Withdraws From India as Part of Restructuring

September 28, 2020

| business

Harley-Davidson HOG recently announced the decision to exit India, the world’s largest two-wheeler market, by discontinuing its sales and manufacturing operations in the country. The decision comes in as part of the company’s global restructuring plan, per which it has been withdrawing from markets, where achieving high levels of volume and profitability is a daunting task.

The coronavirus pandemic has crippled the auto industry, straining auto sales in India. To revitalize the economy, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the “Make in India” program. In this program, the government is offering incentives worth billions of dollars to attract global firms for investing in manufacturing units in the region, including production-linked allowances for automakers. Harley-Davidson’s exit from the Indian market is a setback for Prime Minister Modi’s strategy to persuade global manufacturers to invest in domestic manufacturing in the country.

The iconic motorcycle manufacturer commenced operations in India in 2011,
