  • In it, she shares how individuals of all ages, educations, and incomes typically choose money when it comes to the tradeoff between money and time.
  • When we do this, Whillans explains we give up things that can benefit us in the long run, including happiness, time, and efficiency.
  • She reminds us to savor daily experiences, outsource for things we don’t like to do, take vacations, socialize, and take care of ourselves to better value our time as a resource.

Many of us are not feeling quite as wealthy as we were a few months ago, and it’s only natural that we’re searching for ways to cut back.

When it comes to monthly bills, car insurance is definitely worth targeting. When’s the last time you compared rates? Sure, it can sound annoying and time-consuming, but your efforts can result in some serious cost savings. Clearcover Car Insurance is making it a lot easier than you likely remember. Personal Finance Insider writes about products, strategies, and tips to help you make smart decisions with your money. We may receive a small commission from our partners, like American Express, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

Having a smart savings plan can keep you steady even when times are changing, like they are right now.

Angela Moore, a financial planner, financial educator, and founder and co-owner of Modern Money Advisor, has some smart advice for saving in uncertain times. Her top tip? Automate your finances as much as possible.

“By automating it, you’re doing everything you need to do without even thinking twice,” Moore said.

Create separate spending accounts for monthly costs

If you look at your bank balance and see $1,000 sitting there, you might think it’s a good time to make a big purchase. But you’re probably forgetting about the regular expenses that will

Sharing insights since 2007 on carefully saving money, investing, frugal living, coupons, promo codes because the little things matter in achieving financial freedom!

You don’t need too much of an imagination to realize that having passive income is life changing. And in these uncertain times, I bet any income is comforting, let alone having money rolling in while you basically have to do nothing to earn it.

I’m lucky in that I built up a bit of passive income through the years, but if this crisis taught me anything, it’s that no investments are really truly passive. With large swathes of the economy on total lock down, a phenomenon that’s unthinkable just a couple months ago, it’s putting even once thought bulletproof passive income vehicles into jeopardy.

Take REITs for instance, which I sadly owned a few when the crisis hit. To say that those stocks as a group have been hammered is an understatement since many are still down more than 50% since March. And never mind whether they will be able

Learn how to budget to reach your savings goals. Get the basics on a variety of investments, including savings bonds and other Treasury securities backed by the federal government.

Things to Consider Before You Invest

If you want to pay for retirement, college, or a home, you can invest your money to fund your goals. Before you invest, make sure you can answer all of these questions:

  • What type of earnings can you expect on your investment? Will you get income in the form of interest, dividends, or rent?

  • How quickly can you get your money, if you need to sell or cash in your investment? You can sell stocks, bonds, and shares in mutual funds at any time. However, there is no guarantee you’ll get back all the money you invested. Other investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs) or IRAs, often limit when you can cash out.

Saving Money to Save

May 4, 2020

Most of the personal finance books and blogs talk of saving money by being a smart and frugal shopper by using coupons, buying one get one free, perusing sales circulars or checking in to the merchants phone apps; but I have yet to read any advice on what to actually do with the amount of money that you save.

If I just merely acknowledged that I saved half-off retail price on a pair of sneakers which is about a $40 savings then that’s one thing, but that just keeps the balance on my checking account higher by $40. I would probably just find another item to spend that $40 on since it is technically free right? Get more retail bang for my buck so to speak.

Instead my hack strategy recommendation is to discipline yourself to sweep that $40 you save into your savings account.

Here is an example, I … Read More

Using Solar Heating costs can get expensive when the weather is cold, making it imperative to find ways to save money on heating your residence. Solar panels are used to collect energy from the sun and transform it into electricity that can be used throughout your home. This same solar energy technology can be used to heat your home.

Heat collectors, or solar thermal systems, work similarly to solar power cells, except they absorb heat as well as light that is generated by the sun and uses it to heat the air or a liquid. This heated air or liquid is then used to transfer heat into your home. You have many options that allow you to enjoy a warm home and save money on gas and heating costs with solar energy.

Passive Solar heating is highly effective on large windows that face south, allowing sunlight to stream into your … Read More
