Restoring California’s Forests to Reduce Wildfire Risks Will Take Time, Billions of Dollars and a Broad Commitment | Best States

By Roger Bales and Martha Conklin

Many of California’s 33 million acres of forests face widespread threats stemming from past management choices. Today the U.S. Forest Service estimates that of the 20 million acres it manages in California, 6-9 million acres need to be restored.

Forest restoration basically means removing the less fire-resistant smaller trees and returning to a forest with larger trees that are widely spaced. These stewardship projects require partnerships across the many interests who benefit from healthy forests, to help bring innovative financing to this huge challenge.

We are engineers who work on many natural resource challenges, including forest management. We’re encouraged to see California and other western states striving to use forest management to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire.

But there are major bottlenecks. They include scarce resources and limited engagement between forest managers and many local, regional and state

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance: Now’s the time for estate tax planning | Business News

There are several estate planning strategies to consider before the rules change.

tribune news service

This year is an opportune time to consider succession and wealth planning.

One reason is the federal estate and gift tax exemption is at a historic high of $11,580,000 in 2020 — $23,160,000 for couples if portability is elected on a federal estate tax return. Portability allows a married decedent’s unused estate and gift tax exemption to pass to the surviving spouse. The tax rate is 40%.

This exemption amount expires at the end of 2025, but if the Democrats win big in November, odds are good the exemption will fall sooner because Joe Biden has called for lowering it. He hasn’t given an exact figure, but it could revert to pre-2018 levels of about $5 million ($10 million for couples), with inflation adjustments.

Here are two estate planning strategies to consider now before the

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will meet for the ninth time in a Grand Slam final Sunday at the 2020 French Open.

The two legendary players have not met in a title clash at a major since the 2019 Australian Open. Most of their head-to-head showdowns in Grand Slam finals occurred at the start of their reigns atop the men’s game alongside Roger Federer.

Nadal is chasing after his 20th overall major and 13th crown on the clay at Roland Garros, while Djokovic is trying to capture his second title in Paris and 18th overall major.

As he typically does in Paris, Nadal dominated his first six matches on the path to the final, as he won every set.

Djokovic faced more difficulties in the previous two rounds, and he will enter at a disadvantage based off those recent struggles and Nadal’s career-long form on clay.

‘We’re scared’: Lebanon on edge as time and money run out

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Fouad Khamasi fills his taxi every day with about 40,000 Lebanese pounds’ worth of fuel. It could cost at least four times that much if subsidies come to an end.

The Beirut cab driver, 53, can just about afford to buy fuel and feed his kids. He worries the price of subsidised foods and key imports – wheat, fuel, medicine – will skyrocket.

“These are the toughest days I’ve ever seen,” he said. “Some days, you stick your hand in your pocket and find nothing … I leave the house and just pray. Whatever I make, it does nothing. It’s a joke.”

Time and money are running out for Lebanon.

Foreign reserves have dropped far below what the state already deemed “dangerous levels” when it defaulted on its huge debt in March, meaning it cannot afford to keep subsidies for long.

Ant’s IPO Runs Low on Time to Avoid U.S. Election Turbulence

October 9, 2020

(Bloomberg) — Jack Ma’s Ant Group has a narrow window to make its much-anticipated market debut ahead of U.S. election turbulence. Now its bankers must grapple with any potential delays stemming from a debate in Washington over restrictions on the payments behemoth.

Discussions over how and whether to restrict Ant — as well as Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s payments systems — have accelerated among senior U.S. officials in recent weeks though a decision isn’t imminent, Bloomberg reported.

They come as Ant is expected to raise about $35 billion from simultaneous initial public offerings in Shanghai and Hong Kong as early as this month. China’s biggest payments company already has approval for its mainland listing, but is waiting for a hearing with the Hong Kong stock exchange. That green light would need to come roughly by the middle of October if Ant aims to beat the U.S. presidential vote on

Here’s Why it is the Right Time to Invest in Momentum ETFs

October 8, 2020

Wall Street has seen a lot of turbulences in 2020 so far and Nov 3 elections are just adding to the uncertainties. However, there have been bright spots, for instance, a spectacular August for the Dow and the S&P 500 since 1984 and 1986, respectively. Also, positive developments with respect to the coronavirus vaccine, Fed’s support, U.S. fiscal stimulus and a rebounding U.S. economy with an improving job market have kept investors’ optimistic amid the crisis.

Meanwhile, market participants have been increasingly worried about a spike in new coronavirus cases in several countries in Europe and some U.S. states, lack of vaccine or a line of treatment for coronavirus and uncertainty regarding a fresh round of fiscal stimulus from the U.S. government. Moreover, Trump testing positive for coronavirus shook markets and made investors increasingly apprehensive. However, Trump’s improving health condition and his return to the White house from the Walter

Thai Sept consumer mood drops for first time in 5 months, protests weigh

October 8, 2020

BANGKOK, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Thai consumer confidence dropped in September for the first time in five months on concerns about growing political protests, a slow economic recovery and job losses from the coronavirus pandemic, a university survey showed on Thursday.

The consumer index of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce fell to 50.2 in September from 51.0 in August.

“Various political gatherings made people have no confidence in government stability,” while the surprise exit of the country’s finance minister last month was negative, university president Thanavath Phonvichai told a briefing.

Demonstrators have rallied against the military-backed government in larger numbers in recent months, with some also calling for reforms of the powerful monarchy. The next big protest is set for Oct. 14.

Consumers felt the economic situation remained bad as tourism has yet to recover, Thanavath said.

“If the situation does not improve, there may be more

Newzoo downgrades esports 2020 revenue forecast for third time to $950.3 million

October 7, 2020

| business

Market researcher Newzoo has downgraded its 2020 esports revenue forecast for the third time this year, now saying revenues will likely hit $950.3 million.

The revision is only slightly down from the previous forecast of $973.9 million, which Newzoo predicted back in July. In April, it revised its earlier estimate to $1.059 billion, and back in February — before the pandemic — the forecast was $1.1 billion for 2020 revenues.

The fact that the forecasts haven’t changed much each time points to the reason Newzoo has had to revise the estimates so frequently — namely the unpredictability of the market as a result of the pandemic. Admittedly, the frequent small changes feel a little farcical. On the other hand, it seems prudent for the company to evaluate the fast-changing market every quarter, as esports revenues can be affected dramatically by whether fans will be able to meet in physical venues

These three UK shares are set to furnish the market with trading updates in the days and weeks ahead. Should you buy them ahead of these fresh statements? Here I take a look.

Robert Walters

It’s unsurprising that multinational recruitment specialist Robert Walters has seen its share price collapse in 2020. Since trading started on New Year’s Day its stock has lost a jaw-dropping 32% of its value as the global economy has suffered a Covid-19 shock.

I worry, too, that this most cyclical of shares could be in for a significant period of bottom line pressure. And that third-quarter financials slated for this week (Thursday, 8 October) could exacerbate market fears and prompt a fresh share price slump. Robert Walters certainly spooked in July when it declared that revenues tanked 22% in the first six months of 2020.
