‘It’s his money.’ Billionaire Phil Ruffin denies payment to Trump was unusual

Billionaire casino mogul Phil Ruffin disputes that there was anything unusual about a multi-million dollar payment the Las Vegas hotel he co-owns with President Donald Trump made to the Republican candidate during the 2016 election.

The New York Times published a story Friday examining the one-time payment to Trump as part of its ongoing coverage of the president’s tax returns. The story asserted that Trump was in desperate need of cash as he self-financed his 2016 campaign.

The story builds on a 2019 Kansas City Star story in which Ruffin disclosed that the hotel made a $28 million payment to Trump in 2016 for back fees.

The New York Times story states that the total payment was $21 million based on Trump’s tax returns, but in an interview with The Star Friday, Ruffin continued to assert that the amount was $28 million.

Ruffin, who grew up in Wichita, said

INSIGHT-Secrecy and speed: Inside Ant Group’s unusual IPO process

By Kane Wu, Julie Zhu and Scott Murdoch

HONG KONG, Oct 2 (Reuters) – Ahead of what’s likely to be the world’s largest initial public offering, China’s Ant Group Co Ltd is asking lead bankers to personally sign confidentiality pacts and pressing some investors to explain why they should be allowed to attend marketing meetings, sources familiar with the matter said.

In doing so, Ant is following a highly unusual process that draws on some of the tactics its former parent and affiliate Alibaba Group Holding Ltd BABA.N previously used.

Other unique measures taken by Ant include dividing up the underwriting work for what could be a $35 billion offering among several banks such that no one firm has the full picture of the process, four sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

Three of the sources said the main underwriters are also discouraged from working on assignments

In Unusual Trend, US Trade Deficit Widens In 2020 Recession

When things turn sour for the U.S. economy, the country’s trade deficit, i.e. the difference between exports and imports, usually narrows. As consumer spending goes down during economic downturns, so do imports of goods directly or indirectly targeted at consumers, and as Americans tend to travel less during recessions, service imports (which is how tourist spending abroad is accounted for) also tend to fall. At the same time, loose monetary policy tends to result in a relatively weak dollar, in turn boosting exports and attracting foreign tourists.

As the following chart illustrates, things are different this time around. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic having brought on the deepest recession on record along with an unprecedented jobs crisis, the current downturn did not result in the usual narrowing of the U.S. trade deficit. Quite the

Inside the unusual world of cyber insurance, where ransoms are legally paid to criminal hackers

September 27, 2020

It was an ordinary October day when startled employees of a Canadian insurance firm discovered their computer files locked and a digital ransom note left by hackers.

“Hello, your network was hacked and encrypted. No free decryption software is available on the web. Email us to get the ransom amount.”

After some negotiation, with the help of a British cyber insurance firm, the criminals settled on a payment of $950,000 (£747,000) in Bitcoin to unlock the files. The Canadian company was left with little choice but to pay up. Fifteen days later, the files were released.

This sequence of events was described in a private High Court hearing in December which was unsealed in January.

The businesses involved chose to remain anonymous to avoid tipping off the hackers of their attempt to use the courts to get their ransom money back from a cryptocurrency exchange.

It may seem like a
