Boca’s new golf course could lose money, but city officials say it’s worth it

The Boca Raton Country Club hasn’t been making money, and now its owners are handing it over to the city.

Will it become a municipal money pit? No one knows.

Optimistic city officials say they might break even or perhaps lose a bit of money, but it’s a gamble they’re willing to take.

“It’s a matter of preserving green space,” said Boca City Councilman Andy Thomson. “The city of Boca Raton takes an enormous amount of pride in its beaches, parks — none of those things generate money. It’s an amenity, and that’s how we view it.”

The owners of the exclusive club announced the unusual donation this week, and the city plans to open the 130-acre property to the public in about a year.

The club, at 17751 Boca Club Blvd., features an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a clubhouse and pool. The course and clubhouse are surrounded by

US to collect tariffs on $1.96B worth of aluminum sheet goods: Wilbur Ross

October 9, 2020

| business

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross argues ‘this is the most largest and far-reaching case that the department has brought in over 20 years.’

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says the U.S. will collect tariffs on  $1.96 billion worth of aluminum sheet from 18 countries after determining the goods were unfairly dumped here, the broadest trade enforcement action by the agency in more than two decades.

Collection of the duties on imports from nations including Germany, Bahrain and Oman will go into effect immediately, even though the department’s determination was preliminary, Ross said. The U.S. International Trade Commission is expected to make a final determination in February 2021, he said.

TRUMP SAYS HE WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN VIRTUAL DEBATE: ‘I’M NOT GOING TO WASTE MY TIME’

“This is the largest and most far-reaching case that our department has brought in more than 20 years,” Ross said Friday morning during an interview with

Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo canceled in 2021 due to coronavirus pandemic

October 9, 2020

| business

Event organizers announced Friday the cancellation of the 2021 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo — an annual event that brings over one million visitors to Fort Worth.

The stock show’s president and general manager, Brad Barnes, called the decision “heartbreaking,” and said it “was not made lightly.” The stock show and rodeo has only been canceled once before, he said, at the height of WWII.

“Then, as now, the stock show was canceled to overcome an enemy common to all Americans,” Barnes said. “With more than 1.2 million stock show guests, exhibitors, visitors and competitors converging into the various buildings on the Will Rogers complex during our 23-day show, the chances to harbor and spread coronavirus well beyond the North Texas region, especially in the midst of flu season, is too great a risk to take for the public good.”

The festival was originally scheduled for Jan. 15 through

Pretium Resources: With Lower Expectations, This Canadian Gold Producer May Be Worth A Look (NYSE:PVG)

October 8, 2020
| business

Pretium Resources (NYSE:PVG) is a mid-tier gold producer that operates the high-grade Brucejack mine in British Columbia, Canada. Brucejack is one of the newest and highest grade mines in the sector, but has been plagued by volatile operational performance since going into production in mid-2017. After widely missing guidance in 2019, management released an updated reserve and mine life in the first quarter of this year that showed lower grades and production, sending the stock tumbling further.

Despite these challenges, the company has been surprisingly consistent in generating free cash flow and reported a record second quarter that sent its shares up 25% in one day. With gold prices now hovering around $1,900 per ounce, Brucejack could be one of the most profitable independent assets in a tier-one jurisdiction, making it an attractive takeover target for larger producers looking to grow production.

Looking at a five-year chart, it’s clear that

Lowe’s to hand out another round of pandemic bonuses worth $100 million

October 8, 2020

| business

Lowe’s Cos. announced Wednesday that it is handing out another round of bonuses to recognize its front-line employees in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company, which has 144 stores in Texas, said all full-time hourly workers will get $300, and part-time and seasonal employees will receive $150 on Oct. 16. The bonuses total $100 million and will affect hourly workers at Lowe’s stores, distribution centers and store support centers, the company said.

The latest bonus will match the money Lowe’s provided to all hourly associates in March, May, July and August, according to the company.

The retailer joins other companies from Amazon to Kroger to Target that have provided their front-line and warehouse workers bonuses. Some have even offered free access to virtual doctor visits during the pandemic.

The Home Depot on Forest Lane was extensively damaged last Oct. 20, when 10 tornadoes caused $2 billion in damage to homes and businesses in Dallas, Richardson and Garland.

With the latest bonuses, Lowe’s will have provided more than $675 million in financial support to its sales associates this year,

The More CGC Stock Flounders, the Less Constellation Can Handle It

As this investment story concerns a cannabis company, Canopy Growth Corp. (NYSE: CGC), I’ll do all I can to avoid puns like “cannabis stock high,” “cannabis company goes to pot,” “this weed is smoking,” “seed money” – but it won’t be easy. After all, for a certain age demographic, cannabis stocks conjure images of Cheech & Chong strolling the trading floor in crummy blue jean vests, surrounded by an entourage of admiring traders and a huge honking cloud of smoke. But here are the makings of a serious appraisal: the palpable reality of CGC stock as a growth opportunity.

Gilead, Regeneron, Amgen: Covid Treatment Stocks Still Worth Looking At As Vaccine Nears?

October 5, 2020
| business

Our indicative theme on Covid-19 Treatment Stocks – which includes companies selling or developing treatments for Covid-19 –  is up by 13% year-to-date, compared to the S&P 500 which is up about 4%. While anti-viral therapeutics are quite complex to develop, companies have largely been adapting existing therapies for Covid treatments while also developing new treatment options. Now the long-term demand for Covid-19 treatments is hazy, considering that the development of a safe and effective vaccine could drastically reduce or possibly eliminate the need for treatments. However, most of the companies on the list have other established products that provide significant downside protection. Below is a bit more about these companies and how they have fared this year.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) recently indicated that its experimental Covid-19 treatment that involves a cocktail of two antibodies was effective in reducing viral loads and improving symptoms in non-hospitalized Covid-19 patients. The stock
